Why Columbus water makes bad coffee
Columbus tap water has two problems for coffee: it's hard (18–25 grains per gallon of calcium and magnesium) and it's treated with chloramine. Both affect your coffee in different ways.
Chloramine suppresses flavor extraction. The same chemical that makes your tap water smell like a pool interferes with the delicate aromatic compounds in coffee and tea. You end up with a flat, muted cup — even with excellent beans.
Hard water causes scale. Calcium and magnesium deposit inside your espresso machine, coffee maker, and kettle — reducing efficiency, affecting temperature consistency, and eventually causing expensive damage. A machine that should last 10 years may need service in 3–4 with Columbus tap water.

What the Specialty Coffee Association recommends
