What does your TDS reading actually mean — and what should you do about it?

What TDS measures

Total Dissolved Solids — the sum of all minerals, salts, and metals dissolved in your water. In Central Ohio, it's mostly calcium, magnesium, sodium, and bicarbonates.

What TDS doesn't tell you

A TDS meter measures conductivity — not specific contaminants. High TDS could be harmless hardness minerals or concerning nitrates. A professional test identifies what's actually there.

Central Ohio context

Columbus city water: 200–350 mg/L. Delaware County: 300–450 mg/L. Fairfield County: 400–550 mg/L. Private wells: 200–800+ mg/L.
