Well water in Delaware, Licking, and Fairfield County is not the same as city water. Iron, hardness, bacteria, and nitrates require a treatment train — not a single system. We test first, then design.
Well water is not pre-treated — city water is
Columbus city water arrives at your home already treated for bacteria and pH. The main issue is hardness — 18–22 GPG — and chloramine. A softener and whole-house carbon filter handle it.
Private well water is untreated groundwater. It can contain hardness, iron, manganese, bacteria, hydrogen sulfide, and nitrates — all at the same time, in concentrations that vary by location, depth, and season. A single system won't cover it. You need a treatment train designed around what your specific well actually produces.

These are the contaminants we test for and treat most often in Delaware, Licking, Fairfield, Union, and Madison County wells.
Hardness
Very commonDelaware, Licking, and Fairfield County wells routinely test at 15–30+ GPG. Scale builds inside pipes, water heaters, and appliances from day one without treatment.
Iron
CommonIron above 0.3 mg/L stains fixtures, laundry, and tile orange-brown. Central Ohio well water frequently tests 1–5 mg/L. An iron filter is required — a softener alone is not enough at these levels.
Manganese
ModerateOften found alongside iron. Manganese causes black staining on fixtures and laundry and has EPA health guidelines at 0.05 mg/L. Requires specific treatment media.
Bacteria (coliform)
Test requiredNew wells must be tested for total coliform and E. coli before occupancy. Ohio requires a passing bacteria test for new construction on well water. UV disinfection provides ongoing protection.
Hydrogen sulfide
Occasional"Rotten egg" smell. Common in deeper wells in certain geologic formations. Requires air injection or oxidizing filtration — not a standard softener.
Nitrates
Rural areasAgricultural runoff can elevate nitrates in rural well water. The EPA limit is 10 mg/L. Reverse osmosis is the most effective treatment for nitrate removal.
Important: These are common findings — your well may have none of these, some, or all of them. We test before we recommend. Never install a treatment system on a new well without a comprehensive water test.

Water test first
We test your well before recommending anything. A comprehensive panel covers hardness, iron, manganese, pH, TDS, bacteria, and nitrates. The test results drive every system decision.
Iron & sediment filter
If iron or manganese is present above threshold, an iron filter goes first in the treatment train — before the softener. This protects the softener resin from iron fouling and handles levels a softener cannot.
Water softener
Sized to your well's hardness level and your home's fixture count. Well water hardness varies more than city water — we size based on your actual test results, not a standard package.
UV disinfection
A UV system after the softener provides continuous bacteria protection. Required if your bacteria test shows any coliform, and strongly recommended for all new well construction as ongoing insurance.
Under-sink RO
For drinking and cooking water. Removes nitrates, heavy metals, and dissolved solids that the upstream systems don't address. Especially important if nitrates are elevated.
Not every well needs every step
If your well test shows no iron, you skip the iron filter. If bacteria is absent and you're not in a high-risk area, UV may be optional. We design around your actual test results — not a worst-case package.

Common questions about well water treatment
Do I need to test my well before installing treatment?
Yes — always. Well water chemistry varies significantly by location, depth, and geology. We never recommend a system without a water test. The test results determine exactly which systems you need and how they should be sized. Guessing costs more in the long run.
Can a water softener handle iron in well water?
A softener can handle low iron levels (under about 1 mg/L). Above that, iron fouls the resin bed and the softener loses effectiveness quickly. For iron above 1 mg/L — which is common in Central Ohio wells — we install a dedicated iron filter upstream of the softener.
Is UV disinfection required for new well construction in Ohio?
Ohio requires a passing bacteria test before occupancy on new well construction, but does not mandate ongoing UV treatment. We strongly recommend UV for all new well homes as continuous protection — a single contamination event after move-in is far more disruptive than the cost of a UV system.
When should I call you during the build?
As early as possible — ideally before your plumber draws the rough-in plan. We need to know the treatment train (iron filter + softener + UV) so your plumber can stub in the correct number of connections, drain lines, and electrical. Adding systems after rough-in is possible but costs more.
How is well water treatment different from city water treatment?
City water is pre-treated — hardness is the main issue. Well water can have hardness, iron, manganese, bacteria, hydrogen sulfide, and nitrates all at once. The treatment train is more complex and must be designed in the right order. We test first and design the system around your specific well chemistry.
What does a complete well water treatment system cost?
A basic softener for a low-iron well runs $1,800–$3,200 installed. Adding an iron filter is $1,200–$2,400. A UV system is $600–$1,200. An under-sink RO is $400–$800.
