The problem: high iron, 17 gpg hardness, and hydrogen sulfide

Delaware County well water drawn from limestone aquifers is among the hardest and highest-iron water sources in Central Ohio. Orange staining on porcelain surfaces, rust-colored laundry, and a sulfur smell — especially first thing in the morning when water has been sitting in the pipes — are common complaints from well owners in this area.

Technical note: Delaware County sits on some of the thickest limestone deposits in Ohio. Well water here routinely tests at 14–20 gpg hardness and 2–8 ppm iron. The hydrogen sulfide was produced by sulfur-reducing bacteria in the well casing reacting with naturally occurring sulfates — a common finding in Delaware County wells, especially those with older casings.

Three-stage solution: air injection → iron filter → softener

Iron at 4.2 ppm requires oxidation before filtration — you can't filter dissolved (ferrous) iron directly. The system uses air injection to oxidize iron to its solid (ferric) form, then filters it out, then softens the remaining hardness.

Air injection system
Injects a pocket of air into the water as it enters the treatment train. Oxidizes dissolved ferrous iron (Fe²⁺) to solid ferric iron (Fe³⁺) and oxidizes hydrogen sulfide gas, eliminating the rotten egg smell.

Iron Boss catalytic filter
Filters out the now-solid iron and manganese particles. Backwashes automatically to flush captured iron to drain. Handles up to 10 ppm iron.

Dynamic Series water softener
Removes the 17 gpg hardness after iron is gone. Iron must be removed before the softener — iron fouls the resin bed and destroys softener performance.

Install time: 7 hoursAll three units installed in sequence in the utility room. Air injection head mounted on the pressure tank outlet. Iron filter and softener plumbed in series. Separate drain lines for each backwash cycle.
