Understanding how regeneration works helps you maintain your system properly, troubleshoot problems, and make sure you're getting the soft water you paid for.

What Is Regeneration?

A water softener works through ion exchange: as hard water passes through a tank filled with resin beads, the calcium and magnesium ions (hardness minerals) attach to the resin beads, and sodium ions are released in their place. The water that exits the tank is soft.

Over time, the resin beads become saturated with calcium and magnesium — they run out of sodium ions to exchange. When this happens, the softener stops softening water effectively.

Regeneration is the process of recharging the resin beads. The softener flushes a concentrated salt solution (brine) through the resin tank, which reverses the ion exchange: the sodium in the brine displaces the calcium and magnesium on the resin beads, and the hardness minerals are flushed down the drain. The resin beads are now recharged with sodium and ready to soften water again.

The Regeneration Cycle: Step by Step

A standard regeneration cycle has four stages:

1. Backwash (5–10 minutes)

Water flows upward through the resin tank, loosening and lifting the resin bed. This removes any sediment, iron, or debris that has accumulated in the resin. The backwash water drains away.

2. Brine Draw (30–60 minutes)

The softener draws the concentrated salt solution (brine) from the brine tank and passes it slowly through the resin bed. This is the core of regeneration — the sodium in the brine displaces the calcium and magnesium on the resin beads. The displaced hardness minerals, along with the spent brine, drain away.

3. Slow Rinse (30–60 minutes)

Fresh water continues to flow through the resin bed at a slow rate, pushing out the remaining brine and hardness minerals. This ensures the resin is thoroughly rinsed before returning to service.

4. Fast Rinse / Refill (5–10 minutes)

Water flows rapidly through the resin bed to compact it and remove any remaining brine. Simultaneously, the brine tank refills with fresh water to dissolve salt for the next regeneration cycle.

Total cycle time: approximately 60–90 minutes for most residential softeners.

How Often Should a Columbus Water Softener Regenerate?

This depends on three factors: your water's hardness level, your household's water usage, and your softener's capacity.

How Much Salt Does Regeneration Use?

A salt bridge is a hard crust of salt that forms in the brine tank, usually about halfway up. It looks like the tank is full of salt, but there's actually an air gap between the salt crust and the water below. The salt can't dissolve into the water, so no brine is produced, and regeneration fails.

How to fix it: Use a broom handle or similar tool to gently break up the crust. Don't use excessive force — you don't want to damage the brine tank or the float assembly inside.

How to prevent it: Use high-quality salt pellets (not rock salt or solar salt, which are more prone to bridging), don't overfill the brine tank (keep it no more than 2/3 full), and check the tank monthly.
