If you are shopping for an iron filter for your well water, you will quickly run into three names: Katalox Light, Birm, and greensand. All three are used in whole-home iron filtration systems. All three can remove iron from your water. But they are not interchangeable — and choosing the wrong one for your water chemistry can mean years of frustration, poor performance, and unexpected costs.

This guide breaks down exactly how each media works, where it excels, and where it falls short. By the end, you will know which one is right for your Central Ohio well water.

How Iron Filtration Media Works

Before comparing the three, it helps to understand the basic principle they all share: oxidation followed by filtration.

Iron in well water is typically dissolved (ferrous iron) — invisible to the naked eye but responsible for all that staining and metallic taste. To remove it, you first need to oxidize it, converting it from dissolved ferrous iron (Fe²⁺) to solid ferric iron (Fe³⁺). Once oxidized, the iron particles can be physically trapped by the filter media and then backwashed out to drain.

The difference between Katalox Light, Birm, and greensand is primarily in how they drive that oxidation reaction — and how well they do it.

Birm: The Old Reliable (With Significant Limits)

Birm has been used in residential iron filters for decades. It is a lightweight, granular media made from diatomite coated with manganese dioxide. The manganese dioxide acts as a catalyst, helping oxygen in the water oxidize dissolved iron.

How it works: Birm relies on dissolved oxygen already present in the water to drive oxidation. The manganese dioxide coating speeds up the reaction, but it is entirely dependent on adequate oxygen levels.

Where Birm works well:

  • Low to moderate iron levels (under 3 ppm)
  • Water with sufficient dissolved oxygen (above 15% saturation)
  • Water with a pH above 6.8
  • No hydrogen sulfide (H2S) present

Where Birm falls short:

  • Iron above 3 ppm — performance drops significantly
  • Low dissolved oxygen — the oxidation reaction stalls
  • pH below 6.8 — common in Central Ohio well water
  • Any H2S present — even small amounts of hydrogen sulfide will coat and foul the media quickly, destroying its effectiveness
  • Manganese removal is limited (under 0.5 ppm)

Bottom line on Birm: It is an economical choice for mild iron problems in ideal water conditions. But Central Ohio well water is rarely ideal — low pH, H2S, and iron levels above 3 ppm are common. Birm often underperforms in this region.

Greensand: Powerful but High-Maintenance

Greensand (and its upgraded version, Greensand Plus) is a manganese-treated glauconite media that has been used in municipal and residential water treatment for over a century. It is more aggressive than Birm and can handle higher iron and manganese levels — but it comes with a significant catch.

How it works: Traditional greensand requires continuous or periodic regeneration with potassium permanganate (KMnO₄) — a strong oxidizing chemical — to maintain its iron-removal capacity. Without regular chemical regeneration, the media exhausts and stops working. Greensand Plus (a newer formulation) can operate in a "continuous regeneration" mode using chlorine injection, but still requires chemical feed.

Where greensand works well:

  • Moderate to high iron levels (up to 10 ppm with proper chemical feed)
  • Manganese removal (up to 1 ppm)
  • Municipal water treatment where chemical handling is routine

Where greensand falls short:

  • Requires ongoing purchase and handling of potassium permanganate or chlorine
  • Chemical costs add up over time
  • Improper chemical dosing leads to poor performance or chemical breakthrough into drinking water
  • Heavier media requires more backwash water
  • Not ideal for homeowners who want a low-maintenance system

Bottom line on greensand: It works, but it is a high-maintenance solution that introduces ongoing chemical costs and complexity. For a residential well in Central Ohio, most homeowners do not want to deal with chemical regeneration every few weeks.

Katalox Light: The Modern Standard

Katalox Light is a relatively newer media developed in Germany and now widely used in both residential and commercial water treatment. It is a lightweight, high-surface-area media coated with a thick layer of manganese dioxide (MnO₂) — significantly more MnO₂ than Birm or standard greensand.

How it works: The high-density MnO₂ coating on Katalox Light acts as a powerful oxidation catalyst. Unlike Birm, it does not rely solely on dissolved oxygen in the water — it has enough catalytic capacity to oxidize iron even in low-oxygen conditions. And unlike greensand, it regenerates itself automatically during the backwash cycle using dissolved oxygen, with no chemical addition required.

Where Katalox Light excels:

  • Iron removal up to 15 ppm — far beyond Birm or greensand without chemicals
  • Manganese removal up to 3 ppm
  • Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) removal — handles the rotten egg smell that destroys Birm
  • Works across a wide pH range (6.5–9.0)
  • No chemical regeneration required — self-regenerating with dissolved oxygen
  • Lightweight — requires less backwash water than greensand
  • Long media life (10+ years with proper maintenance)

Where Katalox Light has limits:

  • Higher upfront media cost than Birm
  • Requires adequate backwash flow rate for proper cleaning
  • Extremely high iron levels (above 15 ppm) may require pre-treatment

Bottom line on Katalox Light: For Central Ohio well water — which commonly has iron above 3 ppm, low pH, and H2S — Katalox Light is the clear winner. It handles the full range of contaminants without chemicals, and it does it reliably for years.

Higher iron levels — Many wells in Licking, Fairfield, Muskingum, and Union counties test above 3 ppm, which is beyond Birm's effective range.

Low pH — Ohio well water often has a pH between 6.5 and 7.0. Birm requires pH above 6.8 to work properly. Katalox Light handles pH as low as 6.5.

Hydrogen sulfide — H2S is common in Central Ohio wells, especially in areas with organic-rich soils. Even trace amounts of H2S will quickly foul Birm media. Katalox Light removes H2S effectively.
