Ohio private wells are not regulated by the EPA — testing is your responsibility. Here's when to test, what to test for, and what to do if your well tests positive for bacteria.

Well Water Bacteria Testing in Ohio: What You Need to Know
If you're on a private well in Central Ohio, your water is not tested or treated by any government agency. The EPA regulates public water systems — but private wells serving fewer than 25 people are entirely the homeowner's responsibility.
That means testing is up to you. And in Ohio, where agricultural runoff, aging well casings, and flood events can introduce bacteria into groundwater, regular testing isn't optional — it's essential.
What Bacteria Are We Testing For?
Total Coliform
Total coliform is a group of bacteria that includes many species found in soil, surface water, and the digestive tracts of warm-blooded animals. Total coliform itself isn't necessarily harmful, but its presence indicates that surface water or other contamination has entered your well — and where total coliform is found, more dangerous bacteria may follow.
Ohio standard: Zero total coliform per 100 mL sample.
E. coli (Fecal Coliform)
E. coli is a specific type of coliform bacteria that originates in the intestines of warm-blooded animals. Its presence in well water indicates direct fecal contamination — from livestock, septic systems, or wildlife.
E. coli can cause serious illness: diarrhea, vomiting, kidney failure (particularly in children and elderly). Some strains (O157:H7) can be life-threatening.
Ohio standard: Zero E. coli per 100 mL sample. Any detection is a health emergency.
Nitrates
While not bacteria, nitrates are tested alongside bacteria because they share contamination sources (agricultural runoff, septic systems). Nitrates are particularly dangerous for infants — they can cause "blue baby syndrome" (methemoglobinemia).
EPA MCL: 10 mg/L (10 ppm). Ohio agricultural areas frequently exceed this.
When to Test Your Well
At minimum: Once per year, in spring (after snowmelt and spring rains, which are the highest-risk period for contamination).
Also test after:
- Flooding or heavy rainfall that inundated the well area
- Nearby construction or excavation
- Changes in water taste, odor, or appearance
- Illness in household members that could be waterborne
- New well installation or well repair
- Extended period of non-use (vacation home, rental property)
- Purchasing a home with a private well
Ohio home purchase recommendation: Always test for bacteria, nitrates, and hardness before closing on a home with a private well. Don't rely on the seller's disclosure — test it yourself.
How to Test Your Well
Option 1: Ohio Department of Health Certified Lab
The Ohio Department of Health maintains a list of certified water testing laboratories. Certified labs follow standardized collection and analysis procedures and provide legally defensible results.
Cost: $25–$75 for basic bacteria + nitrate test.
Collection procedure:
- Use the sterile sample bottle provided by the lab (contains sodium thiosulfate to neutralize chlorine)
- Run the cold water tap for 2–3 minutes before collecting
- Do not touch the inside of the bottle or cap
- Fill to the line, cap immediately
- Keep refrigerated and deliver to the lab within 6 hours (or 24 hours if kept on ice)
Option 2: Home Test Kits
Home test kits for coliform bacteria are available at hardware stores and online. They're less accurate than certified lab tests and not suitable for legal or real estate purposes, but they can provide a quick screening result.

What to Do If Your Well Tests Positive
Immediate Steps
- Stop drinking the water — switch to bottled water immediately
- Do not boil water for bacteria — boiling kills bacteria but doesn't remove nitrates or other contaminants
- Identify the source — was there recent flooding? Is the well casing intact? Is the well cap sealed?
Shock Chlorination
For a one-time contamination event (flooding, well repair), shock chlorination can disinfect the well:
- Calculate the volume of water in your well
- Add the appropriate amount of unscented household bleach (5.25% sodium hypochlorite)
- Circulate the chlorinated water through the plumbing
- Let sit for 12–24 hours
- Flush thoroughly until chlorine smell is gone
- Retest — wait at least 2 weeks after flushing before retesting
Important: Shock chlorination is a temporary fix, not a permanent solution. If your well tests positive repeatedly, you have a structural problem that needs to be addressed.
Permanent Treatment: UV Sterilization
For wells with recurring bacteria problems, UV (ultraviolet) sterilization is the most effective permanent solution. A UV system:
- Kills 99.99% of bacteria, viruses, and protozoa
- Requires no chemicals
- Doesn't change water taste or chemistry
- Requires only annual UV lamp replacement
- Provides continuous protection
UV systems are installed at the point of entry — all water entering the home is treated. They're typically combined with a sediment pre-filter (turbidity reduces UV effectiveness) and a water softener.

Delaware and Licking County Well Water
Delaware and Licking County have significant agricultural activity — livestock operations, row crops, and associated fertilizer application. This creates elevated risk for both bacterial contamination and nitrate contamination in shallow wells.
If you're on a well in these counties, annual testing is especially important, and a UV system is a worthwhile investment even if your current test results are clean.
