If you have a private well in Central Ohio, there is a good chance you have dealt with it — the orange ring around your toilet bowl, the rust-colored stain on your white sink, the metallic taste in your morning coffee. Iron in well water is one of the most common water quality problems in the Columbus area, and it is one of the most frustrating.

The good news: it is completely solvable. The bad news: not all solutions are equal, and the wrong one can cost you years of headaches.

Here is everything you need to know about iron in Central Ohio well water — what causes it, what it does to your home, and how to get rid of it for good.

Why Is There Iron in My Well Water?

Ohio sits on top of iron-rich bedrock and soil. When rainwater percolates down through the ground and into your aquifer, it picks up dissolved iron along the way. This is completely natural — but it is also completely unwelcome in your home.

Central Ohio counties like Licking, Fairfield, Muskingum, Union, and Delaware are particularly prone to high iron levels because of the underlying geology. If you are on a well in Granville, Thornville, Marysville, or Zanesville, elevated iron is almost a given.

The EPA does not classify iron as a health hazard at typical well water concentrations, but it does set a secondary standard of 0.3 mg/L (ppm) for aesthetic reasons. Many Central Ohio wells test at 2–10 ppm or higher — well above that threshold.

The Three Types of Iron in Well Water

Not all iron is the same, and this matters a lot when choosing a treatment system.

1. Ferrous Iron (Clear-Water Iron)

This is dissolved iron — you cannot see it when you first draw the water. It looks perfectly clear coming out of the tap. But once it hits oxygen (like in your toilet tank or on your sink), it oxidizes and turns that familiar rusty orange.

This is the most common type in Central Ohio wells.

2. Ferric Iron (Red-Water Iron)

This iron has already oxidized before it reaches your tap. Your water comes out visibly orange or brown. It is essentially rust particles suspended in the water.

3. Iron Bacteria

This is the nastiest form. Iron bacteria are microorganisms that feed on iron and leave behind a slimy, reddish-brown residue — often visible as a gelatinous buildup inside toilet tanks. If you have ever lifted your toilet tank lid and seen a reddish slime, you have iron bacteria.

Iron bacteria require a different treatment approach than dissolved iron alone.

What Iron Does to Your Home

Even at levels that seem minor, iron causes real damage over time:

Staining — Orange and rust-colored stains on toilets, sinks, tubs, showers, and laundry. These stains are notoriously difficult to remove and get worse with every wash cycle.

Appliance damage — Iron deposits build up inside water heaters, dishwashers, washing machines, and ice makers. This shortens their lifespan significantly and reduces efficiency.

Plumbing buildup — Over years, iron deposits narrow your pipes and reduce water pressure. In severe cases, pipes can become partially blocked.

Laundry damage — Clothes washed in high-iron water come out dingy, discolored, and worn-looking faster than they should. White fabrics turn yellowish or orange.

Taste and odor — High iron gives water a metallic, bitter taste. It also often comes with hydrogen sulfide (H2S), which produces that unmistakable rotten egg smell.

Skin and hair — Iron-laden water leaves a film on skin and hair, making hair feel brittle and dull and skin feel dry.

How Iron Is Measured

Iron is measured in milligrams per liter (mg/L), also called parts per million (ppm). Here is a rough guide to what different levels mean for your home:

Common "Solutions" That Do Not Work

Before we get to what actually works, let us talk about what does not.

Water softeners — A water softener is designed to remove hardness minerals (calcium and magnesium), not iron. Some softeners can handle small amounts of ferrous iron (under 1 ppm), but they are not designed for iron removal and will foul quickly if used for that purpose. If you have both hard water and iron — which is common in Central Ohio — you need both a softener and an iron filter.

Sediment filters — These only catch ferric (already-oxidized) iron particles. They do nothing for dissolved ferrous iron, which is the most common type.

Vitamin C tablets in the toilet tank — A popular internet suggestion. It temporarily reduces staining but does nothing to treat the water itself.

Chlorine injection — Can work, but requires ongoing chemical costs, maintenance, and introduces chlorine into your water supply. Not ideal for a whole-home solution.

What Actually Works: The Iron Breaker with Katalox Light

Manganese often travels alongside iron in Central Ohio well water. It causes black or dark brown staining (rather than orange) and has been linked to neurological effects at high concentrations. The EPA's health advisory level for manganese is 0.3 mg/L.
