Columbus city water gets most of the attention when people talk about Ohio water quality. But tens of thousands of Central Ohio households are not on city water at all. In Licking, Fairfield, Pickaway, Knox, Muskingum, and surrounding counties, private wells are the primary water source for a significant portion of the population — and well water comes with a completely different set of challenges than municipal water.

If you are on a private well in Central Ohio, you are responsible for your own water quality. There is no municipal treatment plant testing your water thousands of times a year. There is no utility sending you an annual water quality report. What comes out of your tap is entirely dependent on your local geology, your well's depth and condition, and what is happening in the land around you.

The good news: Central Ohio well water problems are well understood and very treatable. The key is knowing what you are dealing with — and that starts with testing.

What Is in Central Ohio Well Water?

Central Ohio's geology and land use create a predictable set of well water issues. Here is what we see most often.

Iron. This is the number one well water complaint across Central Ohio. Ohio sits on iron-rich bedrock, and as groundwater percolates through the soil and rock, it picks up dissolved iron. At levels above 0.3 ppm — the EPA's secondary standard — iron causes orange staining on toilets, sinks, tubs, and laundry. At higher levels (3 ppm and above), it produces a metallic taste, damages appliances, and can turn water visibly orange. Licking and Fairfield counties are particularly prone to elevated iron due to their underlying geology.

Hardness (calcium and magnesium). Central Ohio sits on limestone bedrock, and limestone dissolves readily into groundwater. The result is hard water — high in calcium and magnesium — throughout most of the region. Hard water leaves white scale deposits on fixtures and appliances, reduces soap lather, and shortens the lifespan of water heaters, dishwashers, and washing machines. Most Central Ohio wells test between 15 and 30+ grains per gallon — significantly harder than Columbus city water.

Hydrogen sulfide. That unmistakable rotten egg smell is hydrogen sulfide gas (H2S), produced by sulfur-reducing bacteria in the aquifer. It is common in certain pockets of Central Ohio, particularly in Knox County and parts of Muskingum County. Hydrogen sulfide is not typically a health hazard at the concentrations found in well water, but it makes water essentially unusable for drinking and cooking.

Bacteria (E. coli and coliform). Bacterial contamination is a serious concern for private well owners. Coliform bacteria — including E. coli — can enter wells through surface water infiltration, aging well casings, flooding events, or proximity to septic systems or agricultural operations. Unlike iron or hardness, bacterial contamination is a genuine health risk. Fairfield County, with its mix of rural residential and agricultural land use, sees elevated rates of bacterial contamination in well water testing.

Nitrates. Nitrates enter groundwater primarily through agricultural fertilizer runoff and septic system leachate. They are a particular concern in Pickaway County and other heavily farmed areas of Central Ohio. Nitrates are a health risk — especially for infants and pregnant women — and the EPA's maximum contaminant level is 10 mg/L. Unlike most other well water contaminants, nitrates cannot be removed by carbon filtration or water softening. Only reverse osmosis effectively removes nitrates.

The Central Ohio Well Water Test: What to Test For

Before you buy any treatment system, test your water. This is not optional — it is the only way to know what you are actually dealing with and to choose the right solution.

For a comprehensive Central Ohio well water assessment, test for:

  • Iron (ferrous and ferric)
  • Manganese
  • Hardness (calcium and magnesium)
  • Hydrogen sulfide
  • pH
  • Total dissolved solids (TDS)
  • Bacteria (total coliform and E. coli)
  • Nitrates

Treatment by Problem: What Actually Works

Once you have your test results, here is how to match treatment to your specific issues.

Iron (0–3 ppm): Whole House Carbon + Water Softener

At lower iron levels, a combination of a whole house catalytic carbon filter and a properly configured water softener can handle iron removal alongside hardness treatment. The softener's ion exchange resin can manage small amounts of ferrous iron, and the carbon filter addresses taste and odor. This approach works well when iron is below 3 ppm and manganese is low.

Iron (3+ ppm): Iron Breaker with Katalox Light

For iron levels above 3 ppm — which is common in Licking and Fairfield counties — you need a dedicated iron filter. We use the Iron Breaker system with Katalox Light catalytic filter media. Katalox Light has a manganese dioxide (MnO₂) coating that oxidizes and traps iron without chemicals, handling iron up to 15 ppm and manganese up to 3 ppm. It also removes hydrogen sulfide. The system backwashes automatically on a set schedule, requiring essentially no ongoing maintenance. This is the most effective iron removal solution available for Central Ohio well water.

Hydrogen Sulfide: Katalox Light or Aeration

For rotten egg odor, Katalox Light handles hydrogen sulfide at moderate levels as part of the Iron Breaker system. For very high H2S concentrations, an aeration system — which exposes water to air to off-gas the hydrogen sulfide — may be more appropriate. A water test will determine which approach is right for your situation.

Bacteria: UV Sterilization

Ultraviolet sterilization is the cleanest, most effective solution for bacterial contamination in well water. A UV system exposes water to a specific wavelength of UV light that destroys the DNA of bacteria, viruses, and other microorganisms — rendering them unable to reproduce. UV treatment is chemical-free, adds no taste or odor to the water, and requires only an annual lamp replacement. It is the preferred solution for E. coli and coliform contamination in residential well water.

Important: UV sterilization must be installed after iron and sediment filtration. Iron and turbidity in the water can shield bacteria from UV light, reducing effectiveness. Proper system sequencing matters.

Nitrates: Reverse Osmosis Only

If your water tests positive for nitrates above the EPA limit, reverse osmosis is the only residential treatment method that reliably removes them. A 5-stage RO system installed under the kitchen sink will reduce nitrates to safe levels for drinking and cooking. Note that RO treats point-of-use water only — it does not treat your whole home's water supply, which is acceptable for nitrates since the primary concern is ingestion rather than skin contact.

Hardness: Water Softener or Conditioner

For hardness, a salt-based water softener is the most effective solution — particularly when combined with iron removal. Salt-free conditioners are an option for homeowners who prefer to avoid salt, though they do not remove hardness minerals and are less effective at protecting appliances in very hard water conditions.

The Complete Central Ohio Well Water Treatment Stack

Most well owners in Central Ohio do not have just one water problem — they have several. Here is what a complete treatment system typically looks like for a Central Ohio well:

  1. Sediment pre-filter — removes particles and protects downstream equipment
  2. Iron Breaker with Katalox Light — removes iron, manganese, and hydrogen sulfide
  3. Water softener — removes hardness, protects appliances and plumbing
  4. UV sterilization — eliminates bacteria and viruses
  5. Under-sink alkaline RO — removes nitrates, any remaining contaminants, for drinking and cooking water

Not every home needs every component. Your water test results determine which stages are necessary. Some homes need only a softener and carbon filter. Others need the full stack. The point is to treat what is actually in your water — not to buy equipment you do not need.

County-Specific Notes for Central Ohio Well Owners

Licking County — Iron and hardness are the dominant issues. Newark and surrounding areas consistently show elevated iron (often 3–8 ppm) and very hard water (20+ gpg). An Iron Breaker with Katalox Light paired with a water softener is the standard recommendation.

Fairfield County — Iron and bacterial contamination are both common concerns, particularly in rural areas around Lancaster and Pickerington. A full treatment stack including UV sterilization is frequently appropriate here.

Knox County — Hardness and hydrogen sulfide are the most common complaints. The geology in Knox County produces some of the hardest well water in Central Ohio, and H2S odor is a frequent issue. Katalox Light handles both.

Pickaway County — Agricultural nitrates are a significant concern given the county's farming intensity. Well owners in Pickaway County should always test for nitrates and, if elevated, install an under-sink RO system for drinking water.

Muskingum County — Iron and hardness are common, with some areas also showing elevated manganese. Katalox Light's manganese removal capability makes it particularly well-suited for Muskingum County well water.

Why You Should Not Guess

Buying a water treatment system without testing your water first is one of the most common and costly mistakes well owners make. A water softener does not remove iron effectively at high levels. A carbon filter does not remove bacteria. An iron filter does not remove nitrates. Installing the wrong system — or the right system in the wrong sequence — wastes money and leaves your water problems unsolved.
