Orange or rust-colored stains on your skin, nails, tub, and clothes are a telltale sign of iron in your well water. Here's what's causing it, what it means for your health, and how to fix it for good.

Orange Stains on Your Skin, Nails, and Laundry? It's Your Well Water.

You notice it first in the shower — an orange tint on the grout, a rust ring around the drain. Then you see it on your white towels. Then on your nails. Then you realize the water coming out of your tap has a faint metallic smell and a slight reddish tint when you fill a glass.

If you're on a private well in central Ohio and this sounds familiar, you have iron in your water. It's one of the most common well water problems in Delaware, Licking, Fairfield, Knox, and Muskingum counties — and it's fixable.

Here's what's happening, what it means for your health and home, and what actually removes iron from well water.

What Causes Iron in Well Water?

Iron is the fourth most abundant element in the Earth's crust. In central Ohio, the limestone and shale geology means groundwater naturally picks up dissolved iron as it moves through rock and soil.

There are two main forms of iron in well water:

Ferrous iron (dissolved / "clear water iron") — Iron that's dissolved in the water. The water looks clear when it comes out of the tap, but turns orange or brown when it's exposed to air and oxidizes. This is the most common form in central Ohio wells.

Ferric iron (particulate / "red water iron") — Iron that's already oxidized. The water looks orange or brown directly from the tap. Less common but more immediately visible.

Iron bacteria — A third type that's not actually iron itself, but bacteria that feed on iron and produce a slimy, rust-colored biofilm. If you see orange slime in your toilet tank or a musty/swampy smell alongside the rust color, iron bacteria may be present.

Most central Ohio well water problems involve ferrous iron, sometimes combined with manganese (which produces black or dark brown staining).

What Iron Water Does to Your Skin and Nails

Orange Tint on Skin

Ferrous iron oxidizes on contact with air — including the air on your skin. After showering in iron-rich water, you may notice:

  • A faint orange or yellowish tint on skin, particularly on lighter skin tones
  • A metallic smell that lingers on skin after showering
  • Dry, irritated skin (iron disrupts the skin's natural pH and can act as an oxidative stressor)

The orange tint usually washes off with soap, but the underlying irritation accumulates with repeated exposure.

Nail Discoloration

This is one of the most common complaints we hear from well water customers. Iron in shower water causes:

  • Yellow, orange, or brownish staining on fingernails and toenails
  • Staining that's difficult to remove with nail polish remover or scrubbing
  • Brittle nails over time (iron deposits interfere with the nail's moisture balance)

Many women spend money on nail treatments trying to fix discoloration that's being caused — and re-caused — by every shower. The staining returns within days because the source hasn't been addressed.

Skin Irritation and Dryness

Iron-rich water is more oxidatively active than clean water. For people with sensitive skin, eczema, or rosacea, iron water can:

  • Increase skin inflammation and redness
  • Worsen existing skin conditions
  • Cause a persistent metallic or "off" smell on skin

Combined with Columbus & Central Ohio hard water (which is also present in many well water sources), the effect on skin can be significant.

What Iron Water Does to Your Laundry

This is often the first place homeowners notice an iron problem — before they connect it to their skin and nails.

White and light-colored fabrics develop orange, rust, or yellow staining that worsens with each wash. The iron deposits into fabric fibers and oxidizes, creating permanent-looking stains.

Towels and bedding are particularly vulnerable because they're washed frequently in hot water, which accelerates iron oxidation.

Bleach makes it worse. This is a critical point: using chlorine bleach on iron-stained laundry sets the stain permanently. If you've been trying to bleach out orange laundry stains, stop immediately — you're making them harder to remove.

To remove existing iron stains from laundry, use a product containing oxalic acid (like Iron Out or similar) before washing. But again, this treats the symptom. The staining will return with every wash until the iron is removed from the water supply.

What Iron Water Does to Your Home

Beyond skin and laundry, iron causes visible damage throughout the home:

  • Orange/rust staining in sinks, tubs, showers, and toilets
  • Clogged pipes and fixtures — iron deposits build up inside pipes over time, reducing water pressure and eventually causing blockages
  • Appliance damage — water heaters, dishwashers, and washing machines accumulate iron deposits that reduce efficiency and shorten lifespan
  • Stained dishes and glassware — a persistent orange film on dishes even after washing
  • Discolored ice — if your refrigerator has an ice maker, iron water produces orange-tinted ice

How Much Iron Is Too Much?

The EPA's secondary standard for iron in drinking water is 0.3 mg/L (300 ppb). This is a non-enforceable aesthetic standard — iron at this level isn't considered a health hazard, but it causes the staining and taste issues described above.

Many central Ohio wells test at 1–5 mg/L or higher — well above the aesthetic threshold. At these levels, staining is severe and the metallic taste is pronounced.

A professional water test will tell you your exact iron level, which determines what type of treatment system is appropriate.

What Actually Removes Iron from Well Water

Iron Breaker Filter (Katalox Light Media)

For central Ohio well water, we install the Iron Breaker system using Katalox Light filtration media. This is the most effective residential iron removal technology available.

Katalox Light works through catalytic oxidation — it converts dissolved ferrous iron to particulate ferric iron, then filters it out. Unlike older iron filter media (birm, greensand), Katalox Light:

  • Removes iron up to 15 mg/L (handles even high-iron wells)
  • Also removes manganese and hydrogen sulfide (the rotten egg smell)
  • Requires no chemical addition — no potassium permanganate, no chlorine injection
  • Backwashes automatically with air and water
  • Has a 10+ year media lifespan

The result is water that's clear, odor-free, and won't stain your skin, nails, laundry, or fixtures.

What About Iron Filters at the Hardware Store?

Whole-house iron filters sold at big box stores use basic sediment or carbon media that's not designed for dissolved iron removal. They may reduce particulate iron slightly but won't address ferrous iron — the most common form in central Ohio wells.

For well water with iron above 0.5 mg/L, a purpose-built iron filter with appropriate media is required.
