An iron filter is one of the hardest-working components in a well water treatment system. It runs continuously, processes every gallon of water entering your home, and handles some of the most challenging contaminants in Central Ohio well water — ferrous iron, ferric iron, manganese, and sometimes hydrogen sulfide.
Like any mechanical system, it needs regular maintenance to keep performing. Neglect it and you'll start seeing orange stains in your sinks, toilets, and laundry — the same problems you installed the filter to prevent.

Understanding How Iron Filters Work
Most residential iron filters use one of three media types:
Air injection / oxidation filters (like the Iron Boss): These inject air into the water to oxidize dissolved ferrous iron into solid ferric iron particles, which are then trapped in the filter media. They're highly effective for iron up to 10–15 ppm and don't require chemical addition.
Greensand filters: Use a manganese-treated sand media that catalyzes iron oxidation. Require periodic regeneration with potassium permanganate. Effective but more maintenance-intensive.
Birm filters: Use a catalytic media that works with dissolved oxygen in the water. Require adequate dissolved oxygen and specific pH range (above 6.8). Lower maintenance but more water-chemistry dependent.
Backwash Schedule
Backwashing is the most important routine maintenance task. During backwash, the filter reverses flow to flush accumulated iron particles out of the media bed and down the drain.
Minimum frequency: Every 3–5 days for most Central Ohio well water conditions.
For higher iron levels (above 5 ppm): Every 1–3 days.
Most modern iron filters have automatic backwash controllers that handle this on a timer. The key is making sure the timer is set correctly for your iron level and water usage.
Signs your backwash frequency is too low:
- Orange tint returning to water
- Reduced water pressure (media bed is clogged)
- Iron staining reappearing in fixtures
Signs your backwash frequency is too high:
- Excessive water usage (check your water meter)
- Media bed not fully settled between backwashes
Annual Maintenance Tasks
1. Inspect and Clean the Control Valve
The control valve is the brain of your iron filter — it manages backwash cycles, service flow, and bypass. Annually:
- Inspect the valve body for cracks or mineral buildup
- Clean the injector (on air-injection systems) with a small brush
- Check the air pocket in the tank (for air-injection systems) — it should be 1/3 of the tank volume
- Lubricate O-rings with silicone grease (never petroleum-based lubricant)
2. Check Media Bed Level
Over time, iron filter media slowly depletes as it's backwashed out of the tank. Check the media level annually by measuring from the top of the tank to the top of the media bed. Most tanks should have 8–12 inches of freeboard (empty space above the media).
If the media level has dropped significantly, add fresh media to restore capacity.
3. Test Your Water
Annual water testing is the best way to confirm your iron filter is still performing. Test for:
- Total iron (ferrous + ferric)
- Manganese
- pH
- Hardness
Compare results to your baseline test from when the system was installed. Rising iron levels in treated water indicate the filter needs attention.
Media Replacement
Iron filter media doesn't last forever. Depending on your iron level and water chemistry, media typically needs replacement every 5–10 years.
Signs it's time to replace media:
- Iron levels in treated water rising despite proper backwash schedule
- Media has turned black or gray throughout (iron-fouled)
- Pressure drop across the filter has increased significantly
- System is more than 8 years old with no media replacement
Media replacement is a professional job — it requires draining the tank, removing the old media, cleaning the tank interior, and loading fresh media to the correct depth.
Troubleshooting Common Problems
Orange Water After the Filter
Possible causes:
- Backwash frequency too low — increase to daily
- Iron level has increased (common in spring after heavy rain) — test water
- Media is exhausted — schedule media replacement
- Control valve malfunction — call for service
Rotten Egg Smell (Hydrogen Sulfide)
If your iron filter is an air-injection type, it should also handle low levels of hydrogen sulfide. If the smell is returning:
- Check that the air injection system is functioning (listen for the air draw during service cycle)
- Test H₂S level — if above 2 ppm, you may need a dedicated H₂S treatment system
- Clean the air injector
Reduced Water Pressure
- Check if the filter is in backwash mode (normal — pressure drops during backwash)
- If pressure is low during service mode, the media bed may be clogged — run a manual backwash
- If pressure remains low after backwash, call for service
